British Blues: Why UK Cheeses Missed the World Cheese Awards

The recent World Cheese Awards, held from 15th to 17th November 2024 in Viseu, Portugal, witnessed a significant absence: many British cheeses failed to arrive in time for judging due to logistical hiccups. Mario Olianas of Yorkshire Pecorino expressed his frustration to us, stating, "Well, it’s pretty disappointing as we’ve done all the paperwork, and it’s been approved. And we sent the cheese more than two weeks ago."

This year's competition was the largest ever, featuring 4,784 cheeses from 47 countries, all vying for the coveted title.

Despite the UK's absence, the event crowned a new champion: Queijo de Ovelha Amanteigado, a soft, raw ewe's milk cheese from Portugal, celebrated for its balanced, voluptuous texture and sublime match of protein and fat.
The World Cheese Awards serve as a global platform for cheesemakers to showcase their creations. The absence of British entries this year highlights the challenges faced by producers in navigating complex logistics and export processes.
At George & Joseph, we understand the dedication behind every wheel of cheese. This year's setback underscores the need for robust systems to support our cheesemakers. By championing local producers and exploring the rich variety of British cheeses, we can ensure they receive the recognition they deserve.
